About Belhaven, NC
Belhaven, NC sits at the intersection of Pantego Creek, Pungo Creek and the Pungo River. The Pungo River is part of the Intracoastal Waterway system, an inland marine route from the northeastern United States to Florida. Established in 1899, this town was appropriately named, as the name Belhaven means “Beautiful Harbor.”
Sportsmen have been drawn to this area for many years to the plentiful wildlife that is common to the area. Over the years, it has been common in the fall to see fishing boats packed into the mouth of Pungo Creek when the Speckled Trout are plentiful. The town’s proximity to the big water is also an attraction to many. From Belhaven, it’s only about an 8-10 mile run to the Pamlico Sound and less than twice that on out to the Outer Banks.
Unlike many small towns its size, Belhaven also offers chain grocery stores and fast food, in addition to the wonderful mom-and-pop businesses it supports. The school system is part of one of the most sought after in the area. The medical community boasts a small hospital that is now part of Vidant Health, a Greenville-based, large medical provider serving 1.4 million people in 29 counties through 10 hospitals.
Over the years, a local restaurant/inn has become famous from New England to Florida……..and beyond. The River Forest Manor, a Victorian mansion, was built the same year Belhaven was established. Over the years, the marina associated with it on the Intracoastal Waterway was a favorite stopover for many boating travelers who were attracted to the smorgasbord of Southern comfort-food prepared in the restaurant. This icon of maritime service is currently being offered for sale. Let me know if you would like some information.
Belhaven is also somewhat famous for its all-out Fourth of July parades and celebrations. The celebration includes all types of events, such as yacht races, horse shoe contests, dancing, music, parade, fireworks, Miss Independence Pageant, etc., which last for several days. This year will be the 70th annual presentation of this event, making it one of the longest running in the state.
Why not plan to be in Belhaven on July 4th for a big-ol time!
